Pair of antique female candle holders, gilt bronze, 19th century. Pair of decorative candle holders or candlesticks in gilt bronze and white marble, in the Louis XVI / Directoire style, 19th-century work.

Each piece features a draped female figure in the antique style, holding a tall flowered cornucopia-shaped top that can hold a candle.

The figures are rendered in a graceful contrapposto: one leg bears the body’s weight, the other is released beneath the drapery, the hips shift slightly, the torso leans, and the raised arm echoes the vertical line of the cornucopia. This serpentine line gives the silhouettes highly successful movement, combining antique inspiration with neoclassical taste.

The drapery, drawn diagonally across the torso and then tied around the hips, emphasizes the body’s shape and enhances the overall slenderness. The updo hairstyles, floral wreaths, raised arms, and fluted cornucopias reinforce the Louis XVI / Directoire vocabulary, reused in the 19th century in decorative bronze pieces for mantels, consoles, or chests of drawers.

The white marble bases are enriched with gilt bronze mounts: front plaques decorated with relief putti, beaded bands, ribbed friezes, small toupie feet, and decorative galleries. The gilding has a rich, luminous appearance, with beautiful depth of tone and age-related variations.

The two pieces can be used as candlesticks, provided candles with a compatible diameter are adapted to the upper cornucopias. Light wear, small signs of use, and variations in the gilding.

Please note: two rows of beads are missing from one of the models. The rest of the set is in good presentable condition.

Weight: approximately 5 kg each. Style: Louis XVI / Directoire.

Technique: gilt bronze and white marble.
