SAINT GWELDAS AND THE DONKEY - POLYCHROME OAK SCULPTURE SIGNED ARMEL DÜ (PAUL DURAND)
If this saint sounds familiar, that is hardly surprising: you have probably already come across works by Paul Durand, also known as Armel Dü, in many Breton churches. This polychrome oak sculpture is entirely typical of his work. It depicts Saint Gweldas (Saint Gildas), a 6th-century monk from the British Isles, considered one of the founding saints of Brittany and the founder of the Abbey of Saint-Gildas de Rhuys. A Breton regionalist sculpture piece that is expressive and decorative.
