This is a finely made collector’s piece measuring 15 cm in height, with a base diameter of 10 cm and a total width including the handle of 15 cm, weighing 775 grams. The body of the stein is decorated with a large student corporation coat of arms divided diagonally into silver, red, and green, marked with a stylized black monogram. The shield is topped with a profile helmet with a plume and rich mantling. Two handwritten inscriptions in Gothic letters reproduce student mottos written in Old French.

The first, “Gallica seis Panier!”, literally translates as “May the banner of France be our rallying point!” (the term “panier” here referring to the banner or standard). The second, “Li dref chemin li cort!

”, means “The right path is the shortest.” German student stein, very likely from Alsace (Strasbourg) or from a francophile tradition. The patinated pewter mount is perfectly fitted. The lid is repoussé-worked with a repeat of the coat of arms surrounded by scrollwork, while the thumb lift features a cut-out leafy decoration in the Baroque style. The great special feature of this piece is its lithophane base in translucent porcelain.

When viewed through the bottom against the light, the varying thickness of the material reveals a highly contrasted and detailed portrait of a conductor or choir master at his music stand, a typical image of the musical fraternities of the period (Sängererschaft). The object is in excellent overall condition.

The earthenware is sound with a bright glaze. The hinge and pewter lid are fully functional.

Finally, the lithophane in the base is clear, with no cracks or restoration. In the same spirit, the packing chips are biodegradable, made from corn starch, water-soluble, and compostable.
