Saint Peter under an arcade - sculpted oak panel, Northern school, around 1600. Saint Peter standing, haloed, walking under an architectured arcade. He holds a large set of keys and a book, his traditional attributes. Relief with successive planes, drapery with long broken folds; the semicircular arch is highlighted with radiating voussoirs. Writing that mixes Gothic survivals with Renaissance accents: short face and beard in triangular tufts, angular folds, but with an architectured setting and radiant halo.
The relief remains contained, designed for integration into a wooden paneling. Readable tool marks visible in the backgrounds and on the edges; key with a pear-shaped ring and rectangular blade typical of Northern workshops around 1600.
Related to figures of apostles from altarpieces, pulpits, and stalls in Northern France and Southern Flanders, late 16th - very early 17th century. Similarities with Flemish tabernacle doors where architecture frames saints in motion. Monoxyle oak carved in relief. Old patina/varnish; visible tool marks; edges showing old wear compatible with an old wooden assembly.
Height 42 cm; width 25 cm; thickness 3 cm. Generally good condition for an old wood. Signs of use, small chips on the edges, occasional micro-lacunae. Oxidized back with tool marks and old fixings at the edge; barely visible and inactive traces of old wood-borers. Stable relief, no problematic structural cracks on the front. Presented uncleaned, with its patina.Delivery within the EU/UK 17 euros. Altarpieces and Flemish/Picard woodwork with apostolic figures, c.
