High Period Rare Offering Plate Saint George Nuremberg 16th Century

  

Rare repoussé brass offering dish depicting Saint George slaying the dragon. A very fine example of Nuremberg metalwork from the 16th century. The dish features Saint George on horseback in the central medallion, brandishing his sword to slay the dragon, while the princess appears praying in the background. The scene is surrounded by a raised Gothic inscription and gadrooning characteristic of Nuremberg production, as well as a wide rim decorated with a finely stamped repeating pattern. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Nuremberg workshops were among the most renowned in Europe for the making of offering dishes and basins intended for both liturgical and domestic use.

The iconography of Saint George symbolizes the victory of Good over Evil. In very good condition with a uniform aged patina. Some signs of use consistent with its age. A very beautiful High Period piece, both decorative and rich in symbolism, sought after for the quality of its repoussé work and the richness of its iconography.
