IMPORTANT BRONZE CROSS - PIERRE TOULHOAT Superb and important bronze cross depicting the Crucifixion. The two figures placed on either side of Christ are traditional figures from the Calvary scene: To Christ's left (the right side for the viewer): the Virgin Mary, his mother, depicted in an attitude of sorrow. To Christ's right (the left side for the viewer): the apostle John, the beloved disciple, shown in a gesture of compassion. These two figures often accompany Christ in sculpted or painted representations of the Crucifixion, echoing the Gospel according to John (19:25-27): "Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and the disciple whom he loved.
