A marine chest, also known as a "captain's chest" or "privateer's chest," is a mobile safe used since the 17th century by army treasurers and captains of military or merchant ships. Most often screwed to the bottom on the captain's cabin deck, it served to protect valuable belongings (money, objects, or important documents) during maritime journeys, and it could also be used during land travels.

Most of these chests were made in Nuremberg, Germany, which had made it its specialty since the 15th century, hence the name "Nuremberg Chest." Ideal for marine collection, boats, folk art.
