Very old Alsatian glazed terracotta mould depicting a swaddled baby. Beautiful honey-brown glaze, age-related crazing, and authentic patina. Good condition for its age: no cracks, no chips.
Wear to the glaze along the upper rim should be noted (see close-up photos).
History & tradition
In Alsace, moulds depicting a swaddled baby were given to young parents as a birth keepsake and a symbolic protection for the home.
They were hung in the kitchen or brought out for special occasions. As folk-art pieces, each example is hand-shaped and glazed.
