Antique straw marquetry box, 18th century, tomb-shaped, checkerboard, folk art
An old and rare rectangular box with a flared “tomb-shaped” form, in rye straw marquetry, dating from the 18th century. The structure is made of handmade layered cardboard, lined inside with the original green-dyed paper. The lid features a central checkerboard pattern framed by crossed lines, and the edges are highlighted with thick braided trims in strong relief. Materials: marquetry and braided straw, period thick cardboard core, original paper. Dimensions: 26 x 20 x 12 cm (L x W x H). Condition: Good overall used condition for an object of this period. Beautiful golden patina to the straw. Please note some wear and slight losses on the braided edges, a few missing straw pieces, and wear/moisture stains on the green paper lining inside. Shipping possible via Mondial Relay for certain European countries (please contact me for the list of countries and rates).
For eco-friendly reasons, my shipments are made using second-hand boxes (sourced from a DIY company). In the same spirit, the packing chips are biodegradable, made from corn starch, water-soluble, and compostable.
