Rare is a very charming Dutch snuffbox with an ambigram from the 18th century, crafted in chased brass. The lid features the coats of arms of the seven provinces of the former Republic of the Netherlands from 1579 to 1795, highlighted in a cartouche. The provinces are: Holland, Zeeland, Overijssel, Friesland, Groningen, Guelders, and Utrecht. The reverse side depicts in its center the lion of the Netherlands receiving seven arrows that symbolize the seven provinces, with the Pope wearing his tiara on the right and a peasant on the left, both concealing an ambigram.
This means that when you turn the snuffbox, our dear Pope and peasant transform into a Fool. It is noted in a cartouche "Vor het vader lart," which translates to French as "Pour le père Lart.
